�On Thursday, August 7, the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association (NorMet) filed with the
United States Department of Health & Human Services, Agency for Healthcare Research &
Quality, to become a Patient Safety Organization. A new initiative offered thru the Federal
Government, this makes NorMet unitary of the first in the state and the nation to file, giving the 30
hospitals participating in the PSO unprecedented federal protections to bring forward critically
significant work to prevent patient safety errors and save lives.
Hospitals partnering with the NorMet PSO testament share information about quality of upkeep, identify
threats to patient safety, and then train and implement best practices. The finish is to become
among the safest hospitals in the nation, and in doing so, patient lives will be saved and
improved, and health tutelage costs rock-bottom.
"By endorsing NorMet filing as a Patient Safety Organization (PSO), the CEOs who draw these
hospitals have again demonstrated their commitment to delivering the safest, highest quality of
care," aforementioned Neil Abitabilo, President of NorMet. "Their commitment to delivering fantabulous care
with compassion to the people of the region is reiterated with their illusionist support of this new
initiative."
The NorMet PSO will be a nonprofit 501(c)3 establishment. Its mission will be to ameliorate the
safety and lineament of infirmary care for patients in the 30 hospitals throughout a septet county neighborhood
north of New York City. These hospitals own over 7200 acute-care beds, serving some 2.5
million people, and as of 2006, are providing annual services of approximately:
-- 260,464 inmate discharges;
-- 719,927 emergency room visits; and
-- 3,873,291 outpatient visits.

preparation, workforce preparation, and wellness information engineering. Within the past quintuplet years,
NorMet has proudly served as one of the original 42 grantees for the US Department of Health &
Human Services, Office of the Surgeon General, on a national Medical Reserve Corps
demonstration project in disaster preparation. NorMet too partnered with area colleges as a
grantee of the US Department of Labor, in nurse education.

'Dark Knight' stays on top with $26M; 'Pineapple Express' is in 2nd place
LOS ANGELES - Batman was higher than Hollywood's newest pot heads.
"The Dark Knight" took in $26 one thousand thousand to finish as the No. 1 movie for the fourth straight weekend, beating the stoner comedy "Pineapple Express," which open in s place with $22.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The weekend haulage lifted the Warner Bros. Batman sequel to No. 3 on the all-time domestic box office charts with $441.5 million, behind only "Titanic" ($600.8 million) and the original "Star Wars" ($461 million).
The last movie to stay No. 1 for four consecutive weekends was "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in late 2003 and 2004, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers. That movie did it during a a good deal slower time of year, with nowhere near the competition "The Dark Knight" has faced during Hollywood's busy summer season.
"It's about unheard of. Summer doesn't usually afford films that much of a wide-open playing field," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers.
"The Dark Knight" should outperform "Star Wars" to become No. 2 on the revenue chart by this coming weekend.
However, the numbers reflect today's higher admission prices, and "The Dark Knight" will not glide path "Star Wars" or "Titanic" in terms of existent number of tickets sold. Taking inflation into accounting, "The Dark Knight" would need to pull in about $900 million to match the number of tickets sold for "Titanic" and around $1.2 billion to equal "Star Wars."
Even so, "The Dark Knight" has far outdone even its studio's expectations. Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., said he would have been felicitous if the movie simply exceeded the $205 jillion domestic summate of its predecessor, "Batman Begins."
It should top out at $510 million to $520 trillion, Fellman said.

Merck To Sell Discounted Antiretrovirals To Mexico

Mexican Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said drugmaker Merck has agreed to sell deuce antiretroviral drugs at a reduced monetary value in Mexico, the AP/International Herald Tribune reports.
Cordova aforementioned that Merck will sell Stocrin, a first-line antiretroviral, and Isentress, a newer antiretroviral, at discounts of up to 40%. Cordova added that about 22,000 HIV-positive people in the area being treated by the Public Health Department occupy Stocrin and about cc take Isentress (AP/International Herald Tribune, 8/1).
At a recent meeting with officials representing 50 humanitarian organizations, Mexican President Felipe Calderon announced that the country was in talks with the pharmaceutical industry to cut the price of antiretrovirals. Calderon as well said he would launch a committee to facilitate negotiate the price of drugs and work to achieve fairer prices to help HIV-positive people receive treatment.
According to Prensa Latina, antiretrovirals are four times more expensive in Mexico than in other countries with comparable incomes (Prensa Latina, 7/30).
